Day 27 → This month, in great detail

Meh. Skipping this, too. It sounds both exhausting and boring.

I’m not happy with the NYE story and I don’t know what to do with it.

I have seen Sherlock Holmes.

Again, again!

Hee.

I'll try to keep the plot spoilers to a minimum )

Every holiday I make plans to make a fancy breakfast, since I’ll have the time, but this time around I thought, You know I’m not really going to cook anything, let’s just get a tasty cereal. So I did, and it was exactly what I wanted.

I’ve also made a great cup of coffee. Yum.

And! Who’s got a great, sweet, lovely story for [info]yuletide? I do! Birthday Cake and Christmas Kisses, Reiji and Naoya from Love Mode. EEE. *bounces about happily*

I’ll try for some recs when the archive is stablized.

And now I’m going to keep working on the NYE story and finish my coffee and watch A Christmas Story. I’m at the part where Ralphie beats up Scott Farkus.

Merry merry, everyone!

Oh, and:

Day 26 → Your week, in great detail

Meh. Skipping it. It feels redundant.

I have given myself a Christmas present tonight: I have given facelifts to all three of my main websites. JennaJones.com, 25 bucks and a cracker and Misslucyjane.com are all dressed up for the holidays. (Now if I could just stop fussing with them. I had the last theme on jj.com for four months—I think that’s some kind of record.)

Few things capture the spirit of the season to me more than this:

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

Happy Holidays, my darlings. Be careful out there.

Day 25 → Your day, in great detail

I woke up about half an hour before my alarm went off so I lay there and dozed for a while, and then my alarm went off. I have it tuned to X96 so I can listen to Radio From Hell while I’m waking up, and they’re usually doing the news at 6:30, so I lay in bed and listened to the news for a while. I also started sneezing quite a bit so I wondered if I was sick and should stay home, but then decided I was being a wuss and it’s a short week anyway, so I finally got out of bed and into the shower at 7:30.

One of the women at work owns an orchard with her family, and after Thanksgiving she offered each of us a box of apples of the breed her brother developed, the Timpanogous. (It's a blend of the Fuji and the Gala, iirc.) They're pretty tasty as table apples, but I can't eat a whole box of apples myself even if I keep them in cold storage for months. So I went hunting for apple recipes and bought the ingredients this weekend.

I have started small with easy apple crisp. My hands are cramped from the peeling and slicing and my back hurts from standing, but my apartment smells like cinnamon and I've got something tasty to look forward to. (If it works out. I don't know how these apples will bake. If they cook up okay I'll try some more recipes.)

And now for an update: the apples bake to a nice texture, just crisp enough, but they release a lot of juice so they wouldn't work in a regular pie. I think next time I need to use fewer apples, too, because the center was too thick for the steam to move through the apples and bake the topping completely.

But it was still very, very tasty. Om nom nom nom.

ARGH. Our new location is going to add another 15-20 minutes to my commute. I live where I do because it's close to work! I don't want to move to Orem!

Day 23 → A YouTube video

Tough one! There are so many choices. Something silly, something serious, something fannish?

I’m going with the one I’ve added most recently: actor Brian Cox teaches a two-year-old the first lines of the “To be or not to be” soliloquy.

My favorite part: “‘That is the question.’” “Yeah.”

Day 22 → A website

I sing of the great Pajiba, a website that began as Scathing Reviews for Bitchy People and has evolved and grown into a site that reviews books, TV and movies, gives you Guides to What’s Good For You, founded the Cannonball Read, rallied ’round the family of one of their regular readers when she was diagnosed with cancer, and calls its commenters the Eloquents.

This is a site for people who love movies and love to talk about them (or, if you’re me, read about people talking about them). I can’t even tell you how many movies I’ve added to my Netflix queue due to reviews from the staff and recommendations from readers.

They also do recaps of shows like Dexter, Lost and Flash Forward, talk about industry news, and have done videos of 100 Best Lines from The Wire. Twice. Why? Because apparently The Wire has at least 200 really good lines.

The Guide to What’s Good For You is currently doing Top of the Aughts.

Day 21 → A recipe

This is the best chocolate sauce in the world.

Afton’s chocolate sauce

Ingredients

* 4 oz. baking chocolate
* 1 cup sugar
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 1/2 cup of butter
* 1 12-oz can of evaporated milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and the butter until they’re smooth, then stir in the the sugars. When they’re all dissolved stir in the evaporated milk. When it’s all incorporated remove from heat, add a teaspoon of vanilla, and serve over whatever you like with chocolate: vanilla ice cream, cream puffs, brownie cake, green grapes, shortbread, etc.

If there’s any left over, store in the refrigerator, covered. It can be eaten cold, but if you want to rewarm it, the microwave will do.

Day 20 → A hobby of yours

The Sims 3

I love strategy games like this. Sims, Theme Park, Starcraft, Warcraft, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Afterlife…yeah. I get a little obsessive until I find something else to obsess over.

I haven’t played Sims for a while because I’ve been wrapped up in writing, but I’m getting the new expansion pack for Christmas and I’ll make some time before New Year’s.

It's often said that the simple things in life are the most precious. What small pleasures make you the happiest?

A good cup of coffee, talking with friends or listening to them talk, a really great episode of TV, a good book, bubble baths, ice cream, taking off my shoes when I get home, sleep, petting a cat.

When I came into work this morning my inbox was empty. Nothing waiting for me, nothing sent this morning. The only thing on my plate is our Christmas party.

Also. I haz a chocolate orange. Om nom nom nom.

The Yuletide fandoms page makes me wiggle like a happy puppy.
